The History of Handbells at Plymouth Church

The handbells were given to  Plymouth Congregational Church in the fall of 1974 by Chuck and Erma Fisher in memory of their son, Brad, who was 11 years old.  It was the Fisher's desire to create a living memorial that would involve young people and be enjoyed by people of all ages, and lastly, would be something that would not be put in a closet after a period of time.  With the generous contributions to the Brad Fisher Memorial Fund, the Fisher's purchased a three octave set of Schulmerich Bells.

Our Directors

After the dedication of the bells in 1974, Barbara Kelly was given the task of developing a handbell program for the church.  Barbara, a music educator, has taught classroom and instrumental music at all levels of the public schools in Lawrence, Kansas.  Before establishing a handbell choir, she convinced her husband, Dr. William L. Kelly, that his expertise was needed.  He was a highly respected musician who had also taught music at the public school and college levels.  Dr. Kelly was also the director of the Lawrence City Band and a member of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association.

William and Barbara's son, "Young Bill", began directing after Dr. Kelly passed away in the late 90's.  Along with Barbara, Bill continues to share his enthusiasm and love for music with the members of the handbell choirs.

The Kelly's began the handbell program in 1974 and it has now grown into six separate choirs.  The choirs began performing at national, regional, and state festivals.  They have achieved recognition for their musicality and exceptionally fine technique.  They continue to tour extensively and have been acclaimed for their technique, muscianship, and varied repertoire.

Our Ringers

Our ringers range from age 11 to 82!  Prior musical experience is not necessary to join one of our choirs, the only requirement is a love of music.
